Richard Torkelson Sr., 88, of Lamberton died Jan. 8, 2014, at his home. Services were Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Lamberton with Pastor Harvey Pedersen officiating. Interment with military honors provided by Andrew Peterson American Legion Post 41 of Lamberton was at Lamberton Cemetery in Lamberton. Sturm Funeral Home of Lamberton handled the funeral arrangements. Richard "Dick" Hanson Torkelson was born Nov. 14, 1925, to Torkel and Tillie (Hanson) Torkelson in Highwater Township of Cottonwood County. He was baptized and confirmed at Highwater Lutheran Church and attended school in Cottonwood County District 3. Dick was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1950 and served during the Korean War with Bravo Company 151st Engineer Combat BN. He was honorably discharged in 1952 and received the Bronze Star. In 1953, Dick married Ardys Holmes in Redwood Falls. He worked farm jobs until 1967 when he started working at the Lamberton Public School. He remained with the school until retiring in 1987. Dick has been a Lamberton resident for the past 48 years. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and Andrew Peterson American Legion Post 41 in Lamberton. He enjoyed reading, playing cards, camping and attending the annual Torkelson family reunions. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, music and chording on the piano and guitar. He was preceded in death by his wife Ardys in 2008; baby granddaughter Torkelson; a grandson, Joshua Torkelson; and sisters: Beulah Matzke, Doris Torkelson and Alpha Erickson. Survivors include his seven children: Richard Jr. (Betty) Torkelson of Windom, David (Kim) Torkelson of Ramsey, Robert (Pam) Torkelson of Crookston, Marilyn (Steven) Straumann of Hutchinson, John (Bonnie) Torkelson of Goose Creek, S.C., Carolyn Torkelson of St. James and Jan (Mark) Benedict of Lamberton; 18 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
