Marvin Prins, 80, of Springfield, formerly of Jeffers, died Dec. 20, 2013, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.
Services were Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield with Pastor Mark Luther Johnson officiating.
Interment was at Jeffers City Cemetery in rural Jeffers.
Sturm Funeral Home of Springfield handled the funeral arrangements.
Marvin Wesley Prins was born April 26, 1933, to Tebbo and Jeanette (Finger) Prins in Brown County. As an infant, Marvin moved with his parents to Amboy Township in Cottonwood County. He graduated from Jeffers High School in 1951.
Marvin worked for Hayes-Lukas Lumber in Jeffers until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1953. He served at Fort Lewis, Wash., until his honorable discharge.
In 1955, he married Mary Lou Grunewald at St. John Lutheran Church in Germantown Township. They moved to Mankato where Marvin attended Mankato State University, graduating in 1958 after majoring in industrial arts and minoring in business and history.
He taught at Lake Wilson schools from 1958 to 1965, then moved to a farm in Amboy Township. They farmed until retiring in 1998 and in 2001, they moved to Springfield.
While living in Amboy Township, Marvin served as the Amboy Township clerk for 26 years and on the Jeffers Elevator board for nine years. He also was a former member of the MEA and NEA and a member of Jeffers American Legion Post 409 since 1955.
Marvin was a former member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Jeffers and United Methodist Church in Lake Wilson and a current member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Springfield.
He enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting ducks, woodworking, playing cards, coffee and visiting with friends, and spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Stacy Prins; sisters, LaDonna (Myron) Eucken and Beatrice Vining; sister-in-law, Bonnie Prins; and brother-in-law, Arlen Meyer.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Mary Lou Prins of Springfield; children: Mark (Theresa) Prins of Laurel, Mont.; Michelle (Brian) Gatz of Granite Falls; Murray (Becky) Prins of Gig Harbor, Wash.; and Marcia (Dan Jr.) Dolezal of Morgan; eight grandchildren; one step-grandchild; four great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters: Clyde Prins of Walnut Grove; Robert (Marjorie) Prins of Storden; Norman (Ruth) Prins of North Mankato; Bernice (Lawrence "Jack") Ryker, Kenneth (Shirley) Prins and Janet Prins, all of Jeffers; Arlene Meyer of Lake Park, Iowa; and Richard Prins of St. Paul; and a brother-in-law, David Vining of Rapid City, S.D.
