Richard Young, 83, of Windom died Nov. 22, 2013, at his home in Windom. Mass of Christian Burial was Monday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom with Father Russell Scepaniak officiating. Special music was provided by Colleen Ortmann, organist; and Mike Foley vocalist. Honorary bearers were Richard's grandchildren. Interment was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in rural Windom. LaCanne Family Funeral Service of Windom handled the funeral arrangements. Richard Joseph Young was born Sept. 10, 1930, to Joseph and Sarah (Penner) Young in Windom. He was baptized and later confirmed at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom. For many years as a young boy, Richard served as an altar boy. He received his education in Windom Public Schools and furthered his education at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. In 1953, Richard married Maxine Kolander. They were blessed with five children: Mike, Darcy, Lynn, Tracy and Scott. For many years, Richard lived in Windom before moving to the metro area for 20 years. He was a surveyor for the State of Minnesota Highway Department for many years, then entered the private sector for the balance of his career. He retired in 2005 and moved back to Windom. Richard was an avid reader, enjoyed golf and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maxine Young; a brother, Roger Young; and an infant sister. Survivors include his five children: Mike (Lois) Young of Windom; Darcy (Dan) Thompson of Eagan; Lynn (Steve) Ratzlaff of Ankeny, Iowa; Tracy Horkey and Arly Soleta of Windom; and Scott (Sheryl) Young of Savage; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
