Vernon Arthur "Butch" Johnson
Vernon A. "Butch" Johnson of Cloquet, formerly of Windom, passed away Aug. 26, 2013, at Sunnyside Health Care Center in Cloquet.
He was born Aug. 9, 1933, in Burns-town Township, Brown County to Art P. and Alice L. (Peterson) Johnson. He was baptized and later confirmed in 1948 at Sharon Lutheran Church in Lamberton.
Butch graduated in 1952 from Jeffers High School of Jeffers.
He was married June 20, 1954 to LaVonne Meier at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom. Two children were born to this marriage. The couple farmed northwest of Jeffers and Butch drove school bus until 1967, when they moved to Windom.
Butch was employed by Bolin Lumber for several years before beginning his employment as a heavy equipment operator with the Cottonwood County Highway Department, where he retired in 1995.He continued as part-time janitor for the Highway Department until 2009.
For health reasons, Butch and LaVonne moved to Cloquet in 2009 in order to be closer to family.
Butch was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church of Esko.
Butch enjoyed fishing, the Minnesota Twins, gardening and travel.
He is survived by his wife, LaVonne of Cloquet; daughter, Marilyn (Milt) Hagen of Cloquet; son, Mark (Lynda) Johnson of Maplewood, Mo.; five grandchildren: Laura Johnson of Indianapolis, Ind.; Rachel (Kurt) Bartell of Duluth; Eric (Amber Mechem) Hagen of Duluth; Kyle Johnson and Todd Johnson, both of Maplewood, Mo.; one great-grandchild: Maxwell Bartell of Duluth; and one sister: Vivian Henry of Annandale.
Visitation was 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 at Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. The visitation resumed on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Esko.
Interment service was at St. Matthew's Cemetery followed with a luncheon in the Family Life Center at the church.
