Michael McCarthy Sr.
Michael Patrick McCarthy Sr., 72, of rural Storden, died Nov. 29, 2012, at his home.
Services were Monday at Amo Lutheran Church in rural Storden with Pastors Mark and Margaret Yackel-Juleen officiating.
Special music was provided by Robyn Galer, organist; Robert and Sally Nelsen, and Mark and Margaret Yackel-Juleen, vocalists.
Casket bearers were Robert Nelsen, William Tjentland, Joseph Olsem, Barry Bondhus, Andrew Tjentland and Nicholas Olsem.
Burial was at Amo Lutheran Cemetery in rural Storden.
Michael Patrick McCarthy was born July 18, 1940, to John and Georgette (Bevalet) McCarthy in Bergenfield, N.J. He was baptized in Bergenfield and later confirmed in Egg Harbor, N.J. Mike and his family moved to a poultry farm in Egg Harbor in 1948, then to New Gretna, N.J., in 1957.
Mike received his education by attending agricultural school in Egg Harbor and a school in Elwood.
In 1971, Mike married Connie Marie Strickler in New Gretna. Mike did landscaping and construction before becoming an over-the-road trucker, transporting construction equipment.
Throughout his life, he also did mechanical work, but did only mechanical work after he was diagnosed with cancer.
Mike and Connie lived in New Gretna until 1996 when they moved to Storden.
Mike enjoyed working on anything metal and had an ability to improvise. He also will be remembered for being able to create "something out of nothing."
Mike was a member of Amo Lutheran Church in rural Storden.
He enjoyed meeting with the guys to have coffee and socialize. His greatest joy was watching his son follow in his footsteps.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Karen Singleton; and a brother-in-law, Art Benecke.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Connie McCarthy of Storden; a son, Michael McCarthy II; a brother, John McCarthy III of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and a sister, Marilyn Benecke of Depford, N.J.
