Monarch butterflies coming back, mallard hens not
I'm not surprised monarch butterflies (so named because they are the king of butterflies) have population problems considering their complex life cycle. Superimpose that on our desire to affect all aspects of our environment with human control and the big butterflies are in a predicament.

New fertilizer rule needs voice of farmers to work
The Minnesota Department of Agriculture is requesting input from the farming community on a rule that limits fertilizer application in some areas of the state in an effort to minimize nitrate pollution in the state's groundwater.

Grandson Wilson gets his moment in the spotlight
Our grandson, Wilson Hochstein, got his moment in the spotlight during the Cottonwood County Fair last week.
If you caught Saturday's front page of the Worthington Globe, you no doubt saw a young boy next to a longhorn cow. Yep, that was Wilson, whom Globe reporter Alyssa Sobotka featured for the Globe's coverage of the Cottonwood County Fair.

Our chance to be on Leno
For several decades, one of the great fears of virtually every Minnesota newspaper editor was that one of our headlines, stories, or ads would appear on late night TV.
At the time, both David Letterman and Jay Leno ran weekly segments featuring newspaper goof-ups. Letterman's was called "Small Town News" and Leno's was simply titled "Headlines." Both comics weren't shy about throwing the newspaper's name in there, right along with mistakes so funny, I admittedly almost died laughing.

We are not the enemy
You may have been a bit alarmed when you received your newspaper today.
As you see, the front page of this newspaper, and many others in the state of Minnesota, is white this week.
No news. No pictures. No information. No entertainment.
Startling? You better believe it is. But when you take a broader look at the world we live in, a white front page may not be all that far-fetched.
