Mystic River to Mystic Lake, little known history
I'm not sure what it is about summer that starts me thinking about Indian history. Maybe it's because of the so-called Sioux Uprising, locally in 1862 that took place in the summer of that year. It ended near Wood Lake and culminated in the mass hanging of 38 Indians the day after Christmas at Mankato.

Updates - don't delay
Windows and software updates seem to cause a lot of anxiety. When Windows updates happen automatically they can occur at inconvenient times and sometimes cause major issues with computers.
Software updates are another issue. They march onto your computer screen and demand attention. Should you do them? Are they safe? Is it a scam? I can tell your blood pressure is rising even now as you read this.

A chance to celebrate our month (and our milk)
It's been going on for 75 years.
June Dairy Month, that is. And, as a dairy farmer, I kind of like the idea that we celebrate what my family and thousands more like it across Minnesota do and what we provide to people. It's milk, of course, and all the wonderful things it can become - cheese, yogurt, butter, ice cream and on and on.

Funds for Bethany
Saturday night's Keeping Up the Kourage Concert at Westbrook Fun Days had a Windom connection.
Funds raised from the concert will help the Bethany Schmidt family with medical expenses involved in Bethany's battle with scoliosis and Chiari malformations.
Bethany is scheduled for surgery in mid-September at Gillette Children's Hospital in St. Paul.

A duck in right field
I always assumed the cozy Sioux Falls Canaries ballpark, the Bird Cage, got its name because of the team's mascot.
However, a certain duck may have something to say about that. It wasn't until midway through Saturday's game that I spotted the hen mallard waddling down the right field line, acting like she owned the place.

Tom the Turkey and other state highlights
If you look closely at the team photo for the RRC/WWG baseball team from their Section 3A title win and their third-place state tourney finish, you'll notice an interesting inanimate object.
Sitting in the front row, usually on someone's knee or under an arm, is a plastic turkey hunting decoy, draped in a red and black camouflage Falcon baseball jersey.
