Bowie knives: a big part of deer hunting heritage
We call things handed down from the past our heritage. Hunting knives, it seems to me, is now a big deer hunting heritage.
It could also, to a lesser degree, even be called a rite of passage for young hunters. "Not 'til you're old enough", we explain to the young people as they grow up. Then, some fall, we let them strap a sheathed knife to their belt and away we go.

Windows 10 tips
We all know how to use a keyboard and mouse - the traditional way. Type on the keyboard, move the mouse and left click. But Windows has so many other keyboard and mouse features.
If you don't right-click on the mouse you should. The menus available are very useful. However, this column is about keyboard shortcuts that can be very helpful as you use your computer.

How to take a left turn on a green light
Question: When I learned to drive 50 years ago, my teacher instructed me to pull into the intersection on a green light, even when there was oncoming traffic, to attempt to make a left turn. I still practice this, green arrows or not. A driver's test person at the DMV office told me I am correct, you are supposed to pull into the intersection. However, it drives me crazy when people sit at a green light and stay out of the intersection, causing only that one car to get through the green light, leaving many other cars behind them to wait for another green light.

Marching for the Gophers
I have to admit I was a little shocked to hear that Sydney Erickson, a 2017 graduate of Windom Area High School, was a member of the University of Minnesota Marching Band.
I wasn't surprised by her ability. She was named the school's female musician of the year at last year's Performing Arts Banquet.
But, as she told me in an interview earlier this month, she marched only once for the Windom Riverfest parade - as an eighth-grader.

Patience is a virtue
Another season has come and gone for the Golden Gopher football team.
And another season passes without the Gophers winning any of their trophy games against Michigan, Iowa or Wisconsin (sorry, I don't count the broken chair trophy that has been established against Nebraska).
It should be expected that a program under a new head coach will struggle. Rarely do teams filled with the previous coaching staff's recruits respond well when that staff is replaced.

Curses, a black screen and curser
We've been getting a lot of calls from computer users who are greeted by their computer with a black screen and a curser. The curser moves when users move a mouse or touchpad, but nothing else displays.
The culprit is a very slow moving Windows update combined with a compatibility issue with a video driver. Generally speaking, the cure to this problem is patience - sometimes lots of patience. I've seen computers take several days to work through this issue. However, once resolved, most computers don't have the issue again.
