Resolutions? How 'bout wishes?
I've scrapped the idea of making resolutions. I always seem to keep them for a month or two - OK, maybe a week or two - and they quickly fall by the wayside.
So, instead, let's make some "wishes" for 2013.
We don't have to keep those, we can just hope - and pray - that these come true at some point during the next 12 months.
So, what are my wishes for 2013?
I'll start with peace on earth and goodwill to men. It's something we can strive for, but quite likely won't happen worldwide. But it can happen right here in our little corner of the world starting with each one of us.
Where peace is really needed is in the Middle East. Activity in Egypt, Syria, Libya, Iran, Iraq and further east, Afghanistan, is a real concern. While I don't believe peace will ever be fully accomplished in that sector of the world in our lifetime, we certainly can wish for the civil wars and unrest to be eased and that democratic governments - not extremeists - might take power, giving hope to many innocent civilians.
Close to home, I wish for the former Towlerton Motors building to be filled with a business. There's a wave of empty buildings suddenly being filled up on the east side of Highway 60 through Windom. It started with the former Bolin Lumber building and the wave has moved south. Activity is taking place at the former Hy-Vee building where O'Reilly Auto Parts is making renovations to move in. My wish is that that wave continues moving south, resulting in a business taking over the former car dealership and completing a revitalization of the northeast business strip of Windom.
In the sports world, I wish the Minnesota Vikings would make the playoffs and, maybe, even pull off a first-round upset. While the prospects of the former happening are possible, especially as well as the Vikings are playing right now, the latter isn't. If the Vikings beat Green Bay on Sunday, chances are very good that they'll turn right around and face Green Bay at Green Bay in the first round of the playoffs.
While we're on the subject of sports, I wish that two or three of the new pitchers the Twins bring into spring training actually pan out. That may get the Twins back to at least .500 baseball, something that we'll all gladly take after a rough couple of seasons.
I wish for intelligence - insert your own joke - when it comes to working with my new tablet. I received a Nook for Christmas and while I'm getting the hang of it, I have two major hang-ups: 1) Being sure the apps I download are safe and 2) trying to remember the path of how I got to some features of the tablet I discovered I can use. Oh, to be young and fearless again.
Those are a few of my wishes for 2013. Here's hoping they come true.
