The recent success of the robotics team highlights what can happen when the right combination of people, ideas and timing come together. Bob Ruby introduced Windom students to robotics this year and, as they say, the rest is history. It didn't come easily. Bob and his wife Sandy along with many volunteers spent countless hours and many late nights making it happen. Throw in bright, eager students and you've got a great winning combination. And the way it sounds, Windom may have a whole army of eager young robot makers using their problem solving skills along with what they learn in math and engineering. This goes hand in hand with almost all evidence I've seen. When you put technology in the hands of kids good things happen. All age levels and demographic groups learn better. They are more engaged, and, yes, I dare say it, they have fun learning. Now the school will introduce iPads to students on a large scale next year. From everything I've seen and learned about this move in other schools and in Windom's pilot programs, good things will happen. It won't be easy. It won't happen overnight. There will be highs and there will be lows. However, Windom has a excellent staff that has been working hard to develop this technology for Windom Schools. Our staff is hard working and dedicated. They will make this happen. And knowing how our kids take to technology, I'm sure there will be some teaching of the teachers by the students. I'm convinced Windom has the right idea using technology to teach. And we have the right people to do the job. Certainly the time is right.
