How technology is changing education

Rick Frederickson
Computer Technician

I'm writing this from the Minnesota Rural Educators Association in Brainerd using my Kindle Fire.
This in itself highlights changes that are coming for education. Most here are using iPads or other electronic devices. It is truly an exciting time for edification. We are at the dawn of a revolution in the way we educate our kids.
Now you may not agree with me. You may say "pencil and paper were good enough for me."
They simply won't work for your kids and grandkids. Here's why: The genie is out of the bottle. Right or wrong. Good or bad. It is done. We did it when we bought our kids the first video game, computer, phone.
Kids now are used to having information delivered to them electronically. They expect it.
The really good news? It is a better delivery system. All studies and data show that, used properly, kids test scores increase, they are more engaged and they actually like learning.
The other good news is that it is more cost effective and more current in the long run. Gone will be old and outdated textbooks and the hundreds of thousands it costs schools and taxpayers to replace them.
Yes, there will be changeover costs. There will be growing pains. But education, as we know it, is changing forever. And it is good.
