In general, a pretty quiet deer opener Saturday
Even before this year's shotgun slug season for deer in our area, I had some concerns about how good it might be despite predictions of a good hunt. There were several reasons for that.
Those deductions included plenty of unharvested corn, a weather front predicted to be moving through (close if not direct), flooded river bottoms for weeks had made them poor cover for deer to hide and last, but not least, a full moon phase.
I also thought some of the predictions of plentiful deer were maybe a bit too optimistic.

We went north to meet the big waterfowl migration
The fall migration of ducks, geese and swans usually arrives a bit later here in southwest Minnesota. Some, including myself, think it is much smaller than in the past. Others can't even remember seeing it at all in recent years. For sure, the movement of blue-winged teal and a few gadwalls and shoveler ducks is barely noticeable. Unless you are sitting in a duck boat or shallow cattails each morning the fall passage of ducks goes on with little notice.
