Schleicher explains reason for his vote against iPad technology
First and foremost, if someone wishes to discuss a matter of policy, I have always listened with the understanding that we as board members are servants to the will of the constituency.
Being so, listening does not always mean agreeing with what is in the best interest of the district. But I still always try and take into account what was said.
On the matter of the iPads, there was nothing said. So to be openly regarded in print without being told there was an issue was disrespectful and unappreciated.
The reason for the voting might have been discerned if anyone who was concerned would have contacted me via e-mail or even discussion directly after the meeting. The problem is that when we began the iPad project, it was an expense of over $200,000 every three years to maintain the technology level.
As I cannot speak for the board, it was my perception that this cost would be deferred by the need for fewer textbooks and that a measurement would be developed to determine that the technology was contributing to a higher level of academic achievement. When I asked for a measurement, the administration e-mailed me saying that the focus was not simply providing impoverished students access to technology and 21st century skills.
So, what I was given was essentially the desire for a blank check on technology with no ability to discern whether the program is successful at any point because it will be justified under social justice and that students need the newest technology or their education is defunct. As this was not the reasoning I voted for the project in the first place and what seemed as an endless expense to the taxpayers of this district, I was unwilling to expand the project.
Furthermore, I will not vote for another technology update unless it is reasonable and has measurement for success. Thank you for your time.
