holds first art show
Staff at Red Rock Ridge Alternative Education Program in Windom believed something was missing from their curriculum heading into the 2004-05 school year. They were right. Art!
So, the discipline was added for this year and Wednesday afternoon, the school invited the public to its first-ever art show in the school gymnasium. More than 150 pieces of work were displayed during the three-hour show, all created by nearly 60 students in grades 2 through 12 involved with the the schools Day Achievement, Level 4 and Alternative Learning Center programs. Art work included oil paintings, batik, abstract, fabric dye, quilting, woodburning and woodcarving, all led by the schools art instructor Ann Johannsen.
Johannsen extended a big thank you to the Remick Foundation which provided grant money for a sewing machine for the school as well as money for art supplies.
Those attending the show also had an opportunity to vote for their favorite piece of art. Kara Eiynk of Westbrook (left) was voted the Peoples Choice Award winner with her long abstract piece. Second-place honors went to Tasha Caviness (right) with her tie-dyed quilted butterfly, while Resa Stenzel (kneeling) took third place with her abstract art.
