Missed opportunities doomed the Windom Eagle football team early on Wednesday and big plays in the second half allowed Luverne to claim a 34-7 win over the Eagles in the regular season finale at Island Park.

Windom had four turnovers in the game and saw three drives inside the Cardinal 20-yard line end without points, including two in the first half.

Luverne got on the scoreboard first. Following an Eagle interception, the Cardinals hit a 50-yard pass to set up a 2-yard touchdown from Declan Beers for a 7-0 lead.

Windom took the ensuing drive nine plays down to the Cardinal 15 before turning the ball over on downs. Luverne then marched 85 yards in 12 plays, capped by a 14-yard pass from Ben Serie to Tyler Reisdorfer for a 13-0 lead.

The Eagles tried to answer before halftime, marching the ball down to the Cardinal 6. But an interception in the end zone halted the Eagle drive.

Late in the first half, the Eagles created a break, when Wyatt Minion picked off a pass from Serie, cut across the field and broke three tackles down the sideline for a 62-yard interception return for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 13-7 at halftime.

The key sequence came in the third quarter. Luverne took the opening kickoff an marched deep into Eagle territory, but on fourth-and-12 from the Eagle 16, a Cardinal pass was stopped a yard shy of the first down, giving Windom the ball at its own 5.

The Eagles then marched 12 plays into Cardinal territory with first down at the Luverne 18. But after three short runs and an incomplete pass, the Eagles turned the ball over on downs.

Three plays later, Serie found Kasyn Kruse all alone behind the Eagle defense for an 86-yard touchdown pass and a 21-7 lead.

The Cardinals tacked on a 9-yard touchdown run from Beers and a 57-yard pick six from Reisdorfer to close out the scoring.

Minion finished with 127 yards rushing on 19 carries for the Eagles. Alex Borsgard added 47 yards on 11 carries.

Luke Gilbertson completed 6-of-20 passes for 54 yards. Minion had three catches for 38 yards.

The Falcons added a 5-yard Sam Hansen touchdown run in the third quarter and a 1-yard Jared Schroepfer smash in the fourth. RRC capped the scoring late in the game when Jon Vogel picked off a pass and raced 49 yards for the score.
