Eagles take heartbreaking 12-inning loss

Springfield 011 000 000 012 = 5-14-1
Windom 001 000 100 010 = 3-10-3

The Windom Eagle baseball team was knocked into the elimination bracket of the Section 3A baseball tournament Saturday, after dropping a 5-3, 12-inning decision to Springfield at Sacred Heart.

The Tigers took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third innings. Windom battled back to tie the game on two different occasions.

In the third, the Eagles got on the board. Devin Nielsen reached on a two-base error, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a grounder by Jacob Gotto.

Then, in the seventh, the Eagles battled to tie the game with two outs. Jack Mellstrom doubled and scored on a single by Andrew Larson. Devin Nielsen's single moved Larson to second. Larson then tried to score on a single to left field by Jeff Pfeffer, but was thrown out at the plate, continuing the game.

The Tigers regained the lead in the top of the 11th before the Eagles again came back with two outs. Bryton Syverson doubled and pinch runner Wyatt Stevens scored on a single by Mellstrom.

But the Tigers caught a break in the 12th. After a single and an error put runners on second and third with one out, Springfield attempted a safety squeeze and misfired. The throw to third appeared to have runner Cooper Scheffler picked off, but Scheffler was called safe. On the next pitch, Carter Erickson laced a single up the middle for a run. Erickson eventually scored on an errant pickoff attempt, giving Springfield a 5-3 lead.

The Eagle tried to come back in the bottom of the 12th. Nielsen singled and Pfeffer was hit by a pitch. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt. But an infield pop-up and a flyout to center ended the threat and the game.

Mellstrom led the Eagle offense with three hits in the game. Nielsen added a pair of hits.

Taylor Quiring threw the first two innings, allowing two runs on five hits. Sam Huska worked the final 10 innings and took the loss, allowing three runs on nine hits. He walked one and struck out five.

Windom will play again Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Marshall in the true-second game of the section tournament against Wabasso. Wabasso claimed a 4-3 victory over MACCRAY. The game was halted after five innings.

Tuesday's winner will face Springfield Thursday, likely in Sacred Heart, needing two wins over the Tigers to advance to the state tournament.
