Eagle skaters ice Trojans in sweep
Girls use fast start for win
Worthington 1-1-1 = 3
Windom Area 6-2-1 = 9

Eight players accounted for nine goals Thursday, giving the Windom Area girls hockey team a well-executed 9-3 victory over Worthington at the Windom Arena.

The win was the Eagles' first of the year against a varsity opponent. Last week, the Eagles defeated the Cambridge-Isanti JV squad.

The Eagles blew the game open in the first period, scoring six goals in a span of eight minutes to take a 6-1 lead.

Kaylee Janssen netted a pair of goals for the Eagles. Arica Svoboda added a goal and three assists while Anna Volk had a goal and two assists.

Other Eagle goals were scored by Emily Stubbe, Katrina LaCanne, Molly Boyum, Abagail Turner and Elizabeth Schoenenberger.

Windom outshot the Trojans 58-15 in the contest. Eagle goalie Emily Steen finished with 12 saves.

The Windom Area boys hockey team improved to 2-0 in Southwest Conference play Thursday with a commanding 9-1 win over Worthington at the Windom Arena.

The Eagles jumped to an early 3-0 lead, then tacked on five goals in the second period.

Ryley Espenson got the Eagles on the board halfway through the first period. Jack Mellstrom gave Windom a 2-0 lead off a well-played two-on-one opportunity with Mitchell Macek. Espenson added his second goal of the period with just under a minute to go.

In the second period, the Eagles scored a shorthanded goal when Macek took a feed from Mellstrom for a goal. Zach Bartosh added a pair of goals in the period, with Devin Nielsen scoring later. Macek finished the Eagles' scoring in the period with a power play goal.

Nielsen then netted a goal 22 seconds into the third period, ending the scoring.

Mellstrom, Nielsen and Dylan Pigman each had a pair of assists in the victory.

Windom outshot Worthington 36-13 in the game. Eagle goalie Nate Monson finished with 12 saves.
