Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central senior Jeff DeCock started his three-event run at the State Class A Track and Field Meet with a bang Friday, capturing the state title in the triple jump.
DeCock sat in second place after the preliminaries with a jump of 43-11¼. He then overtook the lead in the finals with a jump of 44-8. But on his last jump of the competition, DeCock hit the biggest jump of his career, soaring an incredible 45-9 to win the state title by 21 inches.
DeCock will compete again today in the long jump and high jump.
On the track, Windom senior Michael Rivera qualified for the finals in both the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Rivera posted a time of 11.18 in the 100 and 22.86 in the 200 to move on.
Windom senior Holly Larson finished 12th in the girls discus competition, with 102-9 being her best throw of the preliminary round.
Mt. Lake Area was shut out of Saturday's finals despite some solid performances.
Sophomore Lydia Hildebrandt did not advance in the 400 with a time of 61.23. Junior Whitney Klassen was on the outside looking in for the 800 with a time of 2:22.70. The girls 4x400 relay team did not advance to today's competition, finishing with a time of 4:11.48. Junior Jose Gonzalez did not qualify for the finals in the boys 800 despite a career-best time of 1:58.04.
Also competing today will be WWG/RRC senior Chloe Arfsten and Windom freshman Amy Muller in the girls pole vault.
