6/3/2013 10:36:00 AM Eagles one win from state tournament
LQPV 000 000 0 = 0-4-1 Windom 100 000 x = 1-4-2 The Windom Eagle baseball team moved to within one victory of reaching the state tournament Saturday with a thrilling 1-0 victory over reigning state runner-up Lac Qui Parle Valley in the Section 3A Tournament at Granite Falls.
The Eagles scored the game's only run in the bottom of the first inning. Andy Pfeffer hit a one-out single and moved to second on a groundout by Brandon Thongvivong. With two outs, Collin Lovell hit a chopper up the middle. The Lac Qui Parle second baseman fielded the ball but threw wildly to first. The ball ended up in the dugout, allowing Pfeffer to race home with the run.
That proved to be all the run support Lovell would need. The Eagle senior threw a four-hit shutout, walking four and striking out 10 in the victory.
Lac Qui Parle mounted its best threats in the first and third innings. LQPV left the bases loaded in the top of the first, then had runners on the corners with two outs in the third before strikeouts ended both threats.
Pfeffer had three of Windom's four hits in the game, with Thongvivong recording the other Eagle hit.
Windom will now play Thursday in Granite Falls for the Section 3A title, and will face either LQPV or Springfield. Springfield advanced to the true second game in the section by defeating MACCRAY 10-0 on a five-inning no-hitter by pitcher Isaac Kirschstein. Springfield and LQPV will play Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Marshall.
Tuesday's winner will need to defeat the Eagles twice in order to qualify for the state tournament.
