Louisville, here we come
For the third year in a row, Windom FFA is sending a Career Development Event (CDE) team to the FFA National Convention in Louisville, Ky., in October.
This time, it's the chapter's crops team.
"We haven't had a crops team even go to state since I've been here. It (crops CDE) is a bear," says Windom FFA Advisor Darcy Dahna, who is in her 20th year in Windom.
"The kids worked really hard."
The team of junior Spencer Wolter, sophomore Natalie Resch and freshman Eliza Ford coasted to an easy win at last week's Minnesota FFA Convention at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities Campus in St. Paul. The trio racked up 1,973 points, 254 more than runner-up Jackson County Central.
While most teams had four individuals competing with the three best scores counting toward the team total, Windom's crops team had just three. But they were a quality three as Wolter won the individual title, Ford finished fourth and Resch was eighth. Windom was the only team with three members finishing in the top 10.
Meanwhile, Westbrook-Walnut Grove also is sending a pair of CDE teams to the national convention.
The dairy foods team of Pakou Vue, Zua Her, Sam Klaers, Shiney Her and Pahnia Vue won handily, bettering runner-up Wabasso by more than 40 points.
The team swept four of the top six spots, led by Pakou Vue's individual title and Zua Her's runner-up finish. Klaers and Shiney Her finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
The other title came from the soils team of Morgan Dennistoun, Elizabeth Woelber, Mariah Olson and Abby Herding. All four finished in the top 10, led by Dennistoun's individual first-place finish. Woelber, meanwhile, finished fourth, Olson sixth and Herding ninth.
The team bested runner-up Red Rock Central by 24 points.
