Windom schools to close, game cancelled

Windom Area Schools will dismiss classes early today due to a winter storm that is moving into the area.

Classes at Winfair Elementary School will dismiss at 12:30 p.m., while classes at Windom Area Middle High School will close at 12:45 p.m.

In addition, Windom's girls basketball game with Martin County West at Windom Area High School has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

Cottonwood County is presently in a winter weather advisory. According to the U.S. Weather Service, snow will continue through mid afternoon and will become heavy at times. A few lighter snow showers and flurries may linger into the evening hours.

Northwest winds will increase through the afternoon creating areas of blowing snow during the afternoon and
overnight hours.

Snowfall accumulations will average 3 to 5 inches with the highest amounts expected in areas from Spencer, Iowa to
Storm Lake Iowa.

Northwest winds of 10 to 20 mph are expected to increase to 20 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 45 mph during the afternoon and evening. Visibility will be reduced to a half mile or less at times, initially due to
periods of moderate to heavy snow, then in areas of blowing snow this afternoon and overnight.

The U.S. Weather Service reminds travelers that a winter weather advisory for snow and blowing snow means that
visibilities will be limited due to falling and/or blowing snow. Use caution when traveling, especially in open areas.
