The Windom Eagle sports teams will play in the new Big South Conference, beginning in 2014-15, following action taken by the Windom school board Tuesday night.
The board approved two resolutions, first to leave the Southwest Conference, then to join the Big South Conference, which will be a combination of the current Southwest and South Central conferences.
Activities Directors from the SWC and SCC have spent the past few months putting together schedules and bylaws for the new league, which will take effect for the 2014-15 school year, pending approval by the school boards in the two conferences.
The design of the new conference varies by sport. Many sports will employ two divisions, either an East/West format or a Big School/Small School format. Football will have a single conference, with teams playing either seven or eight conference opponents. Boys and girls hockey is proposed to play a double round-robin schedule among all the schools that offer hockey.
The boards from the 13 schools were given a deadline of Nov. 27 to either approve or vote down the proposal.
