10/17/2013 1:52:00 PM School, police to reward belted-in drivers Tuesday
On Oct. 22 the Windom Police Department will partner with members of the Windom High School Student Senate reminding all students, staff and parents to wear their seat belts.
Using the slogan, "Don't be a Dum-Dum - Wear your Seat Belt! Be a Smartie- Buckle up!," Student Senate members and School Resource Officer Dana Wallace will stop all students, staff and parent vehicles entering school property.
Any occupants who are wearing seat belts will receive a Smarties candy and anyone not wearing a seat belt will be given a Dum-Dum candy, plus a flyer on seat belt safety. Low seat belt use is one reason traffic crashes are the leading killer of Minnesota teenagers. In the last three years (2010-2012) there were 103 teen motorists (13-19 years old) killed in traffic crashes - 46 (44%) of those killed were not buckled up, according to the state Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety.
