Pop Groups to perform in Branson this weekend

The Windom Area High School Girls and Mixed Pop Groups are taking their show on the road this weekend.

Next stop: Branson, Mo.

The two groups will be the opening act for two Branson performances - The Twelve Irish Tenors on Friday night in a newly-rebuilt theater and the Clay Cooper Show on Saturday evening in the Clay Cooper Theater. Together, the pop groups will perform a 20- to 25-minute show featuring music from the 1940s.

"Because Branson will honors its veterans, we have a 1940s set that we do for our veterans," explains Rachel Axford, vocal music director at WAHS. "The girls start off with their two Andrews Sisters songs, 'Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree' and 'Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.'

"Then the Mixed Pop Group does a medley of Big Band songs from the 1940s. It's a swing number that has become my every-four-years Branson number because they really love it down there."

This is not the first time Axford has taken the Pop Groups to Branson. In fact, this is the third time - a trip offered every four years - and it's always a popular opportunity for members of the groups.

"They will have the opportunity to perform in two state-of-the-art theaters and be assisted by professional sound and light crews," Axford says. "In addition, they will be attending two performance workshops taught by performers at each of the theaters."

As far as travel arrangements, Axford works with Millie Horkey Travel in Windom to line up the bus trip and the itinerary.

Meanwhile, each student is responsible for covering his or her own expenses for the trip - about $375 per person, which includes almost all meals and housing - either out of their own pocket or from money they've raised through selling magazines and frozen food.

The Mixed Pop Group numbers 36 students in grades 9-12, while 26 girls in grades 9-12 comprise the Girls Pop Group with 18 of those girls involved in both groups.

Joining Axford on the trip as chaperones are Brenda Muller and Diane Low.
