1/16/2013 9:39:00 AM BREAKING NEWS: Council takes first step toward sales tax
The Windom city council moved one step closer to getting a public vote on a sales tax in Windom.
Last night, the council unanimously approved the following motion: "To pursue a local option sales tax for public facilities and an option to include economic development revolving loan fund capitalization."
Council members stressed that the public would get a chance to vote on whether to implement a sales tax. The council had a wide-ranging discussion on the topic. There was general support for a 1% sales tax which some council members would like to see begin in 2015.
To meet that time line, the council will ask lawmakers to approve Windom's sales tax before it goes to the Windom voters. That "enabling legislation" departs from current law requiring the public vote to occur first.
