Windom park board discusses Witt Park as a fire hall site

If Windom officials select Witt Park as the site for a new fire hall, there would be a few tricky hurdles to clear.

Those hurdles were part of the Witt Park discussion at last night's Windom Park and Recreation Commission meeting. Windom Street and Park Superintendent Bruce Caldwell said there are major costs to eliminate and relocate the park's playground, tennis courts and skate rink.

In addition, a major underground power line runs directly through the park. That line feeds the Law Enforcement Center and the Business, Arts and Recreation Center. If part of the project involves the tennis court area, moving that line would be costly, according to Caldwell.

A site has not yet been selected, but several members of the fire hall committee appeared to be leaning toward the Witt Park site at Monday's fire hall meeting.

At Wednesday's park board meeting, Caldwell told the board there are inherent difficulties in relocating city parks. In 2005, city officials got an opinion from the city attorney stating that in order to move the park the city would have to accomplish several difficult tasks.

"At this time, we don't even know if it's possible," Caldwell said.
