Commissioners approve suspension for deputy

After a 25-minute closed session, Cottonwood County commissioners approved four days of suspension for Deputy Eric Haken.

Commissioner Tom White's motion passed 4-0 with Commissioner Kevin Stevens abstaining "because of family ties."

The action calls for three days of suspension with pay and one day of suspension without pay. Haken's vacation days will be used to cover the three paid days, according to Board Chair Jim Schmidt.

When asked why the first portion of today's meeting was closed, County Attorney Nick Anderson said it was "to discuss possible disciplinary action against an employee."

Earlier this week, Haken went before the commissioners to discuss a grievance against the county. The grievance was related to Sheriff Jason Purrington's decision to place Haken on unpaid leave.
