Telecom commission approves Viacom TV contract
At a special meeting yesterday, the Windom Telecommunications Commission voted unanimously to approve a new contract with Viacom Inc., assuring that several current channels will stay on the air, locally.
The list of local channels affected by this decision includes: includes: Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, VH-1, MTV, TV Land, TeenNick, Nick Jr, CMT, CMT Pure Country, VH-1, VH-1 Classic Rock, M-TV 2 and Spike. Windomnet General Manager Dan Olsen said public reaction to the possible loss of these channels was split. The channels receiving the most reaction were the Nickelodeon channels, which carry mostly children's programming.
The commission expressed concern about possibly losing young families to Dish Network and Direct TV. Olsen said the new agreement will result in a $20,000 rate increase for Windomnet's TV programming.
