8/15/2013 7:49:00 AM Fair to deliver free lumberjack show tonight
Tonight Cottonwood County will turn into Lumber Country, USA, as the All American Lumberjack Show cranks up the energy at the Cottonwood County Fair.
Yes, the nationally acclaimed show will hit the Windom Arena floor at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday night. Sally Larson of the Cottonwood County fair board said thanks to local sponsorships and a state grant the event is free to the general public.
The All American Lumberjack Show events will be familiar to anyone grew up watching Wild World of Sports in the 1980s, or has caught the action on a sports channel. Competitors work to chop trees, race across floating logs, or see who is the quickest at attacking a log with a chain saw.
Larson said that in some ways this show is an even better fit than the Demolition Derby once was. She added that the lumberjack show promises a tremendous amount of action and the type of entertainment that is sure to be popular to folks of all ages.
The Stillwater based show will set up a 10,000-gallon pool in the Windom Arena. The Cottonwood County Fair Board enlisted the help of the Windom Fire Department to help fill the pool.
Of course that pool of water is crucial to the show. It is the centerpiece of the show's top highlight - the log rolling competition.
Two competitors wearing spiked shoes will perch on opposite ends of a floating log. The object is to spin the log forward or backward and force the opponent to fall off.
