Balaton man killed in crash west of Windom

A 39-year-old Balaton man died Tuesday evening after a head-on vehicle collision roughly nine miles west of Windom on Highway 62.

Jason Steffes was driving a 2008 Ford west-bound on Highway 62. 24-year-old Cody Falk of St. James was driving a 2011 Ford pickup east-bound on Highway 62.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the vehicles collided head-on in the west-bound lane. Steffes was pronounced dead at the scene.

Falk and his passenger, 20-year-old Nathan Gisch of Mt. Lake, both sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to the Windom Area Hospital.

The crash closed Highway 62 for a portion of Tuesday evening.

Assisting at the scene were the Cottonwood County Sheriff's Department, Windom Police Department, Windom Ambulance, Windom Fire Department, Heron Lake Fire Department and Minnesota Department of Transportation.
