6/25/2013 7:26:00 AM Water main break creates sink hole on 10th St.
Several downtown businesses from 2nd Ave. to 3rd Ave. are without water this morning as crews hustle to repair a broken water main and sink hole on 10th St.
Street Department barriers surround a sink hole at the corner of 3rd Ave. and 10th St., just south of the Travel Place. The hole is roughly the length and width of a small car.
A street sweeper was called in to clear a path of silt that stretched from 10th St. north to Hometown Sanitation.
"We've been flushing mains for the sewer project and we think it happened because of that," said Mike Haugen, Windom water and wastewater supervisor. "It's a low point on the main and it gets a lot of pressure."
Haugen said he is hopeful that the main, which was installed in the 1970s, will be back in operation by noon.
