Jeffers tree program begins

Jeffers is making history this week with the start of its new tree program.

Plans are for Cottonwood Soil & Water Conservation District and state Conservation Corp to plant 10 trees this week. The Jeffers city council approved the Urban Tree Program last April.

According to Dave Bucklin of the CSWCD, the ash borer will likely arrive in Southwest Minnesota in 10 to 15 years. At that time all ash trees will begin to die.

Currently, the Jeffers City Park is 75% ash trees.
Under the new Jeffers program, the City of Jeffers contributes $400 and the Urban Tree Program provides a $400 match.
