Windom schools to offer free lunches for entire summer

Windom's school lunches do not end with the final bell of the last school day this spring - nor will it for the next few years.

Starting May 28, any Windom school district resident from age 1 to 18 is eligible for a free lunch at Windom Area High School. Lunches will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays throughout the summer.

It is all possible thanks to a new five-year federal grant.

So to recap, kids can walk into the high school - with or without parents - get in the lunch line and receive a free tray of food, any day of the week, all summer long.

"We are getting this because our number of free and reduced lunches is high," said Peggy Pfeffer, business manager at Windom Area High School.

For much more on this story, see the May 15 Cottonwood County Citizen and Citizen eEdition.
