on Friday, Saturday
Area speech competitors are polishing their pieces one more time in hopes of landing state tournament berths when they compete in section speech tournaments Friday and Saturday.
Speakers from Windom Area, Mt. Lake Public and Mt. Lake Christian will be competing in the Section 2A Speech Tournament at St. Peter High School Friday, starting at 3:45 p.m.
Meanwhile, Westbrook-Walnut Grove section qualifiers will be competing in the Section 3A Speech Tournament at Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. The first round of competition begins at 8:45 a.m., with finals set for 1 p.m.
The top three in each category advance to the State Speech Tournament April 20 at Blaine High School.
Windom sends 12 A dozen Windom Area High School speakers will be competing in Friday's meet in St. Peter with one seeking her third state tournament berth.
Senior Mijah Murden, the team's lone Sub-Section 5 champion, will be vying for her third trip to state in three years. She won the poetry category last week in Fairmont and has garnered two state medals in the interpretive category during her career.
Joining her in St. Peter will be a quintet of individuals who earned silver medals in the sub-section meet. They include senior Eli Yackel-Juleen and junior Emily Axford in duo interpretation, junior Blake Warner in great speeches and sophomores Aaron Axford and Kaitie Bartelt in creative expression and original oratory, respectively.
Also advancing to the section meet from Windom are the duo interpretive team of senior Amy Elston and junior Marissa Cartwright; seniors Hanna Low in original oratory and Erin Thiessen in poetry; junior Elsa Mendoza in prose; and freshman Natalie Resch in storytelling.
Four qualify from MLC Sophomore Elijah Stoesz paces a quartet of Mt. Lake Christian speakers competing in Friday's meet in St. Peter.
Stoesz was the Sub-Section 5 champion in informative speaking at Fairmont last week, while his junior teammate Alex Hu was third in the same category.
Also competing for MLC will be senior Rachelle Adrain in great speeches and eighth-grader Danica Dick in storytelling.
Mt. Lake's Rojas vying Senior Andy Rojas will be the lone representative from Mt. Lake Public competing in Friday's meet at St. Peter.
Rojas was a third-place finisher in humorous interpretation at the sub-section meet.
Four compete for WWG Four individuals will be competing for WWG at Satuday's Section 3A Speech Tournament in Marshall. Because Section 3A trimmed its sub-sections from three to two (a north and a south), the top seven in each category advanced to the section tournament from the sub-section meets. Leading the WWG contingent are sophomores Zuag Pag Her and Sawyer Helgeson, who finished second and third, respectively, in drama. Helgeson was a state qualifier in prose a year ago.
Joining them will be senior Tommy Knudson, who finished fourth in humorous, and seventh-grader Abe Her, who was sixth in creative expression.
