3/26/2013 4:23:00 PM Windom takes third at SMSU speech meet
Windom's speech team turned in one of its strongest performances of the year Saturday at the Southwest Minnesota State University Speech Tournament in Marshall.
And it comes at the right time as the local speakers prepare for Monday's Sub-Section Speech Tournament in Fairmont.
Windom finished third in the Large School Division at SMSU, racking up 49 points, just four points behind meet champion Adrian and two behind runner-up Pipestone.
Although Windom didn't have any individual champions, it did have five runner-up performances, led by senior Ryan Helmoski. Helmoski, who wrapped up his prep speech career with a silver medal in discussion, will not be competing in post-season competition. Helmoski will be part of the Windom Eagles Robotics Team that will be competing in the VEX World Championships in California next month. That competition falls at the same time as the Class A State Speech Tournament.
Coach Lisa Letcher cited the senior for his contributions to the team over the past three seasons.
But Helmoski was not alone in earning a silver medal Saturday. Seniors Mijah Murden and Rachel Witt finished second in poetry and drama, respectively. Juniors Isaac Steele and Blake Warner finished second in humorous and great speeches, respectively.
Steele, who was double-entered in the meet, also came home with a fourth-place finish in informative speaking.
Senior Eli Yackel-Juleen and junior Emily Axford teamed up for a fourth in dramatic duo while senior Abby Resch and junior Elsa Mendoza brought home fifth-place honors in great speeches and prose, respectively.
Windom competes in the Section 2A Sub-Section 5 Speech Tournament Monday in Fairmont. The tournament begins at 3 p.m., at Fairmont High School.
Windom is joined by Mt. Lake Public, Mt. Lake Christian, Alden-Conger, Blue Earth Area, host Fairmont, Jackson County Central, Martin County West and United South Central.
