Erickson takes top spot in
It took only two words for eighth-grader Sydney Erickson to claim the title of Windom Area Middle School Spelling Bee champ: "catapult" and "residue."
After spelling those two words correctly, her first two words in the spell-down finals, Erickson earned the right to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee in Mankato in two weeks.
The winner of that Bee moves on to the National Scripts Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in June.
Erickson's competition in the spell-down was eighth-grader Eliza Ford, who incorrectly spelled catapult, opening the door for Erickson.
Ten individuals advanced from a 40-word written test onto the Spelling Bee stage in the Gold Gym Monday afternoon. In addition to Erickson and Ford, the other eight included seventh-graders Dylan Colbert, Sam Diemer, A.J. Fauglid, Dylan Ngirkelau, Brent Reisdorfer and Eric Soleta as well as sixth-grader Ashley Steenhoek and fifth-grader Shelby Erickson.
