DNR Wildlife Manager Markl honored by DU

Local DNR Wildlife Manager Randy Markl was recently honored by Ducks Unlimited as the 2012 Minnesota Conservation Partner of the Year.

The award recognized Markl's years of dedication to wetlands and waterfowl conservation. Markl has worked for the DNR for 35 years, beginning in Slayton, then working as a wildlife technician in Grand Rapids. He has served as wildlife manager at the Windom office since 1988.

Markl noted that since coming to Windom, the acreage in Wildlife Management Areas in the area has increased from 8,000 acres to nearly 14,000 acres. That includes work with DU and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to acquire land and easements to control water levels in area lakes and wetlands designated for wildlife management. The most recent were Teal Lake in Jackson County and Bolstad Slough in Cottonwood County, which were the 46th and 47th lakes in the state with a wildlife designation.
