Burning ban lifted -- for now

Cottonwood County Sheriff Jason Purrington stresses that the county's burning ban is no longer in place.

Monday night's overnight rain eased the fire threat in the county. However, the ban could be only temporary. If dry conditions return and persist, the burning ban could be put in place again.

In addition, officials from the City of Windom say that any time the county puts a burning ban in place a ban is also automatically in place for the City of Windom. During those times, no fires are allowed in the Windom city limits. That includes recreational fires and leaf burning.

Last week, Windom Fire Chief Dan Ortmann said conditions were extremely dry and volatile. He urged the public to report any type of burning as soon as possible.

Some residents were unaware of the ban within Windom's city limits. In fact, police stopped one resident from burning leaves over the weekend. It is unclear whether a citation was issued in the matter.
